McCoy's Karate Improves Series... Shoot for the Stars! by Sensei Barry McCoy
Kentucky - I have taught thousands of students over the last thirty years. The one area that I believe seperates those few students that achieved the rank of BLACKBELT versus those students who came close but gave up on their dream is one word....GOALS!
As an instructor and father I have set spiritual goals, family goals, and personal goals in which I have achieved many and still have several more that I am still striving for.
I have set goals in my marriage, with my children and most importantly spiritual goals that will have an eternal effect on my future.
My greatest personal accomplishments have been in the martial arts and law enforcement where I have reached most all of my goals. I am now searching for new goals in the martial arts, fitness, and even exploring a new martial art in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu.
Today, I challenge you to set goals. I want all of my students to write down on a piece of paper some short term and long term goals that you want to accomplish in your lifetime.
I look forward to seeing what you are dreaming to become!
Keep Kicking...

The BLACKBELT...
Do you really know the true meaning of being a BLACKBELT? So many people have the wrong idea of what it means to wear one. Some think that having a BLACKBELT makes them an instructor/sensei....Wrong! Some thinks it makes them a expert in the martial arts....Wrong again! Being a BLACKBELT in McCoy's Karate means that you have paid your dues in mastering the basics. That's right, BASICS!!! It took me a little over four years to earn mine. So the next time you think of being a BLACKBELT look in the mirror and test yourself as you perform your stances, blocks, punches, kicks, and katas. Those five areas will let you know if your skills are BLACKBELT level or if you still need more practice before you are entitled to strap on a belt that thousands of people never get to. Remember, If you ever do make a BLACKBELT in McCoy's Karate..."It's not the end, it's just the beginning of your martial arts experience." Good luck in one of the greatest goals a martial artist can achieve.

Quote of the Month: "Setting goals is the first step in becoming a great martial artist." - Sensei McCoy"
212 At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water; comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. ONE DEGREE
Raising the temperature of water by one extra degree means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a machine - a beautiful, uncomplicated metaphor that ideally should feed our every endeavor - consistently pushing us to make the extra effort in every task we undertake.
212 degrees serves as a forceful drill sergeant with it's motivating and focused message while adhering to a scientific law - a natural law.
It reminds us that SEEMINGLY SMALL THINGS CAN MAKE TREMENDOUS DIFFERENCES. So simple is the analogy that you can stop reading right now, walk away with the opening thought firmly planted in your mind, and benefit from it for the rest of your life.
