First, I would like you to know that I am very happy to have the opportunity to share my style and it's history. There are many styles and systems of the martial arts. I have found over the years that the style you study makes very little difference. Styles can create prejudice, Bruce Lee once stated, "Because of styles people are separated."
I work as a police officer and have found that with over twenty years of experience in law enforcement and a P.P.C.T. (Pressure Points Control Tactics) instructor that a lot of the techniques that was created in china, okinawa and japan just doesn't work in real life street situations.
The fact is when your faced with a life or death situation you want something that will work. McCoy's Karate has proven to be effective in all situations. We have one central theme that McCoy's Karate is based on. It is the philosophy of Mr. Glenn R. Keeney, "Keep it Simple, because it's the simple things that work." The Police Academy is also teaching that, "Less is Best."
I have studied okinawan, chinese, japanese and korean systems. In all my years of research and comparing systems I have found that there are good techniques in all systems, but none of them are perfect.
McCoy's Karate is a collection of all my years of training. It was developed for today's American Martial Artist. It is effective in the street for personal self defense. It also has been very effective for kickboxing and tournament karate. It is a style that is just as good on the ground as it is standing up.
My school has a reputation of training champions, but this system wasn't developed to create champions. It was developed to prepare an individual the means to protect him or herself if the need were to arise.
McCoy's Karate explained...
McCoys Karate is a very balanced style of self-defense. We stress a balance of kicks, strikes, punches, and ground techniques to prepare our students for any situation that may arise.
The martial arts is different for each individual. What might work for one person may not for another. A persons size, strength, quickness, knowledge and mental capacity plays a huge part in defending one's self.
The balance of McCoy's Karate allows each individual to perform what he is capable of and to alter movements from left side to right side or vice versa.
The Seven Katas of McCoy's Karate
Our seven katas were created so that every movement in every kata could be articulated so that a complete understanding could be achieved. Our kata is our style plain and simple. As a famous martial artist once said, "Karate is Kata, Kata is Karate."
At my school, McCoy's Karate is not just physical training. We stress on mental discipline and mental toughness. The three components that make up McCoy's Karate are spirit, mind and body. All three must be balanced to reach maximum proficiency.
We will try to bring out your full potential through our methods. You will be patiently taught methods that will enable you to defend yourself and develop your total awareness as a human being. Awkward, uncoordinated bodies and insecure minds are gradually molded into quick, confident individuals with instant reactions and superb restraint.
Here at McCoy's Karate, Our goal is to help you develop character, confidence and respect for others. Our goal is to help you reach yours.
I look forward to having you in class,
Sensei Barry McCoy
